STATIC PORT
Steve Gifford: Drums Static Port is a groove-oriented quartet whose sound blends together funk, progressive rock and jazz with an experimental, adventurous edge in a primarily instrumental setting. Hailing from Troy, New York, the band features not one, but two bass players. Static Port’s unique sound is accented by the double-barreled bass playing, but is really defined by their sophisticated musical compositions and adventurous improvisations. The musical roots of influence on the band include Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, and The Meters, but theirs is a contemporary sound that fits well with current jazz/jam hybrids such as John Scofield, The Benevento/Russo Duo, and Medeski Martin and Wood. Static Port makes defiantly intelligent yet passionately emotive music. They do not pander to their audience, nor do they try to pass off musical incoherence as “avant-garde art”. Both smart and accessible, their music is the perfect antidote for any listener who has grown weary of the ordinary. Static Port came together in May of 2006, and has undergone a couple of lineup changes since then. The band currently features original Static Port members Steve Gregory and Chris Jordan on basses, along with newer members Terry Plunkett on guitar and Steve “Giff” Gifford on drums. The original lineup, which featured guitarist Bill Pyle and drummer Neal Berntson, released their debut “The Static Port” in June of 2007. To differentiate between the two lineups, they have dropped the “The” from their name, becoming simply Static Port, and the new lineup is currently at work on a follow up to the 2007 debut. The Albany Times Union has described their music as “a smart groove that nimbly walks the line between jazz, prog-rock and jam-band without nestling easily into any of those categories”, and albanyjazz.com raves that their music has the effect of “funking you silly”.
